Wind power and siting controversies in the American West

During my utility-scale solar research I watched the controversy unfold over the Ocotillo Express wind farm, which was near one of my case studies in the Imperial Valley, California. I developed a teaching case study with SESYNC based on some preliminary research I conducted on the controversy: Green Civil War in the California Desert: The Ocotillo Express Wind Energy Project. Teacher's can find a role play activity that I hope adds to deeper and more informed conversations about wind power controversies and more collaboration during the siting process.

In fall 2016, I started to sketch out a new research project on the proposed offshore wind farms and leasing programs in California. I'm excited because this project will be my nearest field site as the case study project is proposed a few hours south of Monterey Bay and the Big Sur coast. The project will begin in the winter 2017 during my time at the Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford University.
