Life Cycle Assessment
My research looks at how metrics through life cycle analysis are used to make decisions or represent the impacts of commodities. I have done an extensive meta-analysis of PV LCAs published before 2009 and have conducted annual surveys of LCA use in the PV sector since 2009 with the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. My primary research in LCA is on developing land and water use metrics for solar energy, natural gas, and biofuels. With EcoShift I have conducted and led LCA projects to look at climate and environmental impacts of corn ethanol, seaweed to ethanol processes, the entire USA fossil fuel reserves, bio-based industrial oils, photovoltaics, lithium ion batteries, renewable industrial chemicals.
Current LCA-related research projects: (1) LCA of three lithium-ion battery chemistries. In collaboration with Electric Power Research Institute with EcoShift. (2) Member of the LCA task group working on the sustainability leadership standard for photovoltaics with the National Standard International.
